We had a busy May at RAIS! Amongst the usual hectic drop-ins, full office, and our weekly LGBTQ+ social group, we had our rehearsals for The Dukes, Lancaster The Box project, which we shared with the public last week! Our refugee and asylum seeker group shared their performance along with Prime Time (a creative group for those 60+), Lancashire Young Carers, the Traveller Heritage Group, Queer By Gum, and 4Ever Unique (Unique Kidz & Co's group for disabled adults aged 18-30). RAIS closed the day with the RAIS House Party, getting everyone involved in dancing and having fun! We also

🌹RAIS IS GOING TO PRESTON!🌹 We are now looking for Preston-based folks to join our new drop-in volunteer team (see advert below). We are excited to announce that beginning Friday 29th May, RAIS will run a drop-in helping asylum seekers in Preston! *TONIGHT AT 8PM* Tonight, in a Volunteer Special for Beyond Sanctuary, we are in conversation with Lindsey, who has been a volunteer at RAIS Lancaster for years. A former probation officer (who worked with the highest risk sex offenders) and NHS nurse, we hear her informed opinions on the misinformation and myths around asylum seekers and doing this work as a woman. We reflect on her journey to becoming a strong advocate for refugees and listen to some of the music that inspires her. We also dedicate a song to our departed friend, Asrin, who passed away the night after

Today, RAIS closed to honour our friend and client, Asrin. We are heartbroken to write that at around 4:15am this morning, on 15th April 2026, Asrin passed away at 28 years of age. After a sudden deterioration beginning on Thursday last week, after weeks of relative stability, it became evident that Asrin had short time left over the weekend and that medical repatriation was no longer possible. She began slipping away from the world peacefully over a course of days, surrounded by those who love her, and having calls with her family during a nationwide internet shutdown in their country,

Our Operations Manager is raising money for her friend Asrin, who is also a client of RAIS Lancaster. Asrin is a 28 years old woman who has been battling Stafe IV bile duct cancer for more than two years, which has now become terminal. She has been told she has limited days left to live after fighting since diagnosis in December 2023. Her final wish is to be with her family as she dies, who are in her home country. The only safe way for her to get there is via an air ambulance, which is what we are asking

This week, RAIS volunteers gave an incredible 44 hours of their time to helping asylum seekers and refugees! The volunteers came from 11 different nationalities, including: Afghanistan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Ireland, Kurdistan (Iraq and Iran), Pakistan, Syria, the UK, and Yemen.
Our volunteers gave their time helping with job applications, writing CVs, healthcare advocacy, housing support, legal support, applying for disability support, interpreting from 7 languages (not including dialects!), and getting people legal representation for asylum appeals. We are so lucky to have such an international team where everyone's skills are used to help so many people. 🧡

Beyond Sanctuary - The Podcast - Beyond Radio
This series is a companion to the Beyond Sanctuary radio programme. It highlights the often harrowing stories of refugees and asylum seekers who have arrived in the Lancaster & Morecambe district but often demonstrates the hope that is found in settling in this area.
One of our wonderful asylum seeking clients, 'Omar' from Uganda is on Beyond Sanctuary tonight in conversation with RAIS Lancaster. He tells us about persecution against certain groups in Uganda, the instability and community fractures caused by colonialism in the country, and how life changed so drastically when he was visiting the UK and needed to claim asylum. 'Omar' is a community-focused person, determined to make the most of educational opportunities and freedom in the UK as he builds his new life. 📻Live from 8pm: www.beyond.radio/player/ ↩Listen again from 9pm: www.beyond.radio/on-air/listen-again/ 🎙Listen to the podcast series on the Beyond Radio

RAIS is proud to share its first ever Impact Report! 🥳 In our first year funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, we have worked hard to find out what impact we are having on asylum seekers and refugees, volunteers at RAIS, the wider community, and how we have improved as an organisation. We are delighted with the findings! rais.org.uk/our-impact/ A huge thank you to Sharon of Think Forward C.I.C.; her work with RAIS on measuring impact and writing this report has been amazing.
Over the moon for three of our LGBTQ+ clients being granted asylum in recent weeks. RAIS has provided legal support, advocacy, mental health support referrals, and community support during the asylum process. We are delighted they can move forward and heal with the stability they need. 🌈🧡
RAIS was busy last week! We began our first ever LGBTQ+ social group for asylum seekers and refugees which will take place weekly on an invitation-only basis to ensure it remains a safe space. Then on Wednesday afternoon, we were joined by Mark from LDCVS at our drop-in, who worked with more than 10 asylum seekers and refugees to get them started volunteering locally. We are very happy to say Mark will be joining us on a monthly basis! In the evening, RAIS had its Annual General Meeting with our amazing members with a wonderful meal from The Global Village
LIVE NOW on Beyond Radio! 📻 An amazing asylum seeking man, 'Sam' from Yemen is on Beyond Sanctuary tonight in conversation with RAIS Lancaster.
